What do you do when a friend moves into a 70something foot sailboat?
Have a pirate themed boat warming party! Yarrrrgh!
Thinking of what to bring for the potluck was interesting- hard tack? fruit to fight scurvy? I ended up bringing bread, pirated from a community event, torn off in hunks.
We arrived in the dark, looking for the boat with "two wooden masts." I had been warned that the boat was big and beautiful, but I was surprised to step into the kitchen, and immediately see more stairs going down into a galley area, with 12 beds, and two more bedrooms and a bathroom down there! After we ate for a while, we watched a documentary on the creation of the boat itself. Our friend is boat sitting it during the winter while the owners are in Hawaii working their tree farm. The family built the boat themselves over the course of 10 years in a coastal home town in Oregon, using all Hawaiian woods. It was amazing to see the shots of the wood skeleton in the Oregon forest, of wiring the electricity (that was powering the flat screen TV we were watching the documentary DVD on!) , of laying down the beautiful deck wood, rolling the ship to harbor, and then finally launching it! It was an honor to get to spend time on such a special, beautiful boat.
